Meet & Greet Art
A jacket and robust footwear? These are not the first items you think of when planning a museum visit. It is advisable though, because within the framework of the special UM programme Meet & Greet Art, a guide from the Bonnefanten museum will take visitors to the Sint Pietersberg caves on Sunday 15 October. During the Second World War, important works from the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum were hidden there in safe keeping. "It is said that Rembrandt's Night Watch was also stored there", says Chantal Thomassen, education officer at the Bonnefanten.
The museum on the Maas, with its eye-catching tower, has set up a programme in English especially for students at the Maastricht University, one Sunday afternoon every month. "You don't need to be super intellectual or to know a lot about art. Anyone can take part, but it is first and foremost meant for foreign students who wish their visits to the museum to be more meaningful. More meaningful, so not just looking at a painting on the wall, but speaking to the director, visiting the restoration workshop, learning more about modern art, or the preservation of old Flemish paintings", says Thomassen.
It is not the first time that the Bonnefanten wants to involve students in this way. "We started doing this last year. And no, it is not just students from Arts and Social Sciences who sign up, although one might expect so."
The programme is on Sunday afternoon, so the ones who are able to taste the culture are those who do not go home in the weekend. Next Sunday, 24 September, the series will start with a general introduction outlining the museum, its collection and the building. Next month is devoted to the old art - including a visit to the Sint Pietersberg - in Art Survival: How did art survive? Sunday 5 November, a meet & greet with the artistic director of the Bonnefanten has been scheduled. The December programme consists of a combination tour: a tour of the museum and the Onze Lieve Vrouwe basilica. Two birds with one stone: both art and the history of the city of Maastricht will be highlighted.
